That’s right: on March 1st, 2010, the first page went live here on the site.
Can you believe it? I can barely. A huge thank you to all of you who have stuck around with it, or picked it up recently. I can’t express how grateful I am that some of you read this with dedication and interest, and comment on the pages. You guys rock!
We’re about to enter the Final Movement, but the story still has a way to go. Will we be seeing SS’s third birthday in the future? Hard to tell. All I can say is that it definitely gets better from here on out as all these different paths we’ve witnessed begin to come together and we eventually reach the conclusion of Olivia’s journey.
Sorry I wasn’t able to line the anniversary up with the milestone page this time. Page 200 will just have to wait.
But now I want to hear from YOU! Two questions in particular come to mind that I’d love to discuss:
So far have you enjoyed the real world segments more, or the Soul World segments?
Do you have a favorite character? If so, who?
Personally, I tend to think the real world segments have gotten a little more interesting, so I like working on those. As for characters, I truly do like them all, but I guess there’s a special place in my heart for good ol’ Carl.
When I started Soul Symphony, I wasn’t exactly expecting fanart of my characters to ever become a thing that people did. But, to my surprise, it’s been done! Here’s a collection of some of the SS fanart I’ve gotten over the months:
Battle-ready Olivia and her sidekick by the super awesome guy and fellow webcomic dude David Ko
Carljungian slips by the ultimate judge and sequential art critic Jef.
Olivia Myers, Carljungan, and John Deribell by my good friend and partner in crime Mike. (plus, silly bonus!)
A couple of bickering buddies by the very talented, very helpful Kinuchio.
Olivia vs. Cole, pitting my brain-child against an original character of my old friend Gen. [Added 2/11/11]
Recital-ready Eric and magic-conjuring Carl by the ever generous and always fantastic Allie. [Added 6/29/11]
Ashley the drummer girl by Jess, fellow webcomic creator of Dax Comics. [Added 8/21/11]
Gnarlequin: Outside the Box mock album cover by Paul Corn and Landon Franklin, creators of Zokusho. [Added 9/25/11]
Our trio of heroes by my longtime acquaintance, cool artist, and really generous dude, PhantomGrey. [Added 2/19/12]
Thanks to everyone who shows me stuff like this, it means a lot. If anyone else is feeling the fanart-y mood, I’ll put you on this list as well.
So I’m hereby officially announcing a Soul Symphony Create-A-Character Contest. Here are the rules:
1. Keep it appropriate. Really obvious, and I think it’d be pretty hard to screw this up, but just don’t. Use common sense.
2. Try not to just make the character YOU, okay? This is a “Create a Character” contest, not a “Hey dude put me in your comic” contest.
3. Unless you have a good reason, which I’m willing to be persuaded about, try to stay away from instruments that characters already play. This means unless you intentionally want them to interact with a certain character based on section, try to avoid clarinet, trombone, electric guitar [there's leeway on this one], viola, drums [leeway here] or singing [here too.]
4. Only one character submission per person.
To submit a character, just leave the following info as a comment here or email it to me.
Name
Gender
Age (Most characters are 16 year old sophomores, Charlie is a 17 year old junior, and teachers are totally fair game because I need more.)
Instrument: List all if there are multiple, but indicate what they’re best at or play primarily.
Three facts about the character
One flaw in the character’s personality or anything negative about their life in general
BONUS QUESTIONS [not required!]:
Favorite Genre of Music
One recurring visual motif or theme to represent the character: John’s got basketball, Charlie has jesters, next chapter has spiders, etc.
Color to represent the character: Purple, Red, Green, Blue, and Orange are already taken. You can of course pick colors like “lime green” or “sky blue”
ALSO if you can draw feel free to draw me a picture of your character, if you want. If you can’t draw but you’re REEEEAAALLY enthusiastic about telling me what they look like, write a description I guess. Not required.
Submissions are due by October 31st (Halloween). Winners will be announced on November 1st.
Prize: I will pick TWO winners. TWO. The prize is getting your character in the comic, and having your username mentioned here on the site for being cool I guess. Also my gratitude and respect. If a winner is someone I know in real life their actual name probably won’t be posted here.
Being someone who’s always willing to spread the good news of webcomics, I was very happy to hear about Comics Roulette. It’s a site that gives you a random webcomic from its directory each time you click a button. You can just keep clicking “Next” and see different webcomic images [which link to their sites] and hopefully find one you like.
The site, found at http://www.comicsroulette.com/ , was launched on Saturday and I was one of the first authors to partner up with it. Click the Webcomics Directory link at the bottom to get a list of the included webcomics and you’ll see me there. Most of my pictures so far are character art [which I haven't posted on this site, so go check it out] and I’ll be uploading more and some comic pages at the end of the week.
If you’re a reader, go there and find some new comics that strike your fancy. If you’re a creator, go there and email the owner your site, its genre, and some pictures and spread the word of your series!
(Keep in mind that even though I keep my own comic family-friendly all the time, I can’t guarantee anything for the other comics found on ComicsRoulette. I’m in no way responsible for any but my own.)
Welcome one and all to my new webcomic, Soul Symphony!
I hope you stick around to enjoy my tale of music and magic. It will combine the elements of high school drama and fantasy adventure. To get a better idea, visit the About and Cast pages. If you’re reading this, chances are my comic’s still in the Prologue, which I’m using to introduce everything you’ll need to know about Soul Symphony as quickly as possible before we jump into the semi-episodic chapters.
The comic will update Mondays and Fridays. For constant news, comic updates, and drawings, follow me on Twitter!
